Frequently Asked Questions
I'm here to help you through the process.
If you have any other questions, just send me an email (email@example.com) - I'd love to hear from you!
I'm not sure I understand how the process works until I have the commissioned artwork in my hands. Could you explain the steps?
Absolutely, I'm so glad you asked! I try to simplify the process as much as possible:
Step 0: You contact me with your idea (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Step 1: We pick a photo together (I'd love to help you choose)
Step 2: You pay 50% of total invoice
Step 3: I draw (7-10 days)
Step 4: You review and approve finished drawing
Step 5: You pay remaining balance of 50% of invoice
Step 6: I ship the artwork to you (within 1-2 days of received payment)
Step 7: You receive your art commission (3-7 days within US, 8-10 days outside US)
Do I get to see the custom artwork and provide feedback before it ships?
Of course, I won't ship your artwork until you're 100% happy with it! Once I completed the drawing I'll send you a photo of it. You can suggest some minor adjustments, that I'll make free of charge of course. Once those are approved by you, I'll sign the sketch and send it off to you.
What is the fastest way I can get my commissioned artwork? Do you offer rush delivery?
I absolutely understand, that your time is extremely valuable. That's why I aim to get you your custom art as soon as possible. My lead times are 7-10 days for finishing the drawing and shipping usually takes 5-7 days within the US, which means typically within 2-4 weeks your custom art will be at your door (depending on how quickly we pick your photo and how quickly you make the payments).
If you need your commission very last minute or on a specific day, please reach out to me at email@example.com to see if it's possible - I'll do my best to make it happen!
Rush shipping is definitely available for additional charges.
What type of photo do you need for my commission?
For a great drawing it is very helpful to have a photo with natural (sun) light that shows a lot of details of the architecture or animal. Ideally the photo shows everything you'd like me to draw, I'm not able to add anything that's not visible on the image.
Regarding the resolution of your photo, the higher the quality the better of course. But if you used the image for instagram or facebook, it's very likely that I can work with it as long as it's not blurry.
I'm still not sure which photo to use. Can you help me?
That's what I'm here for! If you're unsure which photo is best or if your photo is usable, I'm happy to help - for free and without any commitment from your side of course. Just send me an email with the image(s) attached: firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll figure it out together!
What forms of payment do you accept?
You'll receive two Paypal invoices in total from me (50% before I start drawing and 50% after I'm finished). But don't worry, you don't have to create a Paypal account to pay me, you can use any credit or debit card. (Here's a great article on how to pay without an account: https://www.paypal.com/us/selfhelp/article/How-do-I-pay-for-a-payment-request-or-invoice-FAQ2206)
What paper and medium do you use?
I'll draw your commission on a 8x10 inch (20x25 cm) white paper (smooth surface, acid-free, around 100 Lb/ 270 g/m2). I only use my collection of mechanical pencils to sketch. After you've approved the artwork I'll spray an acid-free and archival-safe fixative on the paper to protect the original illustration against smudging.
Do you ship to other countries outside the US?
Yes, I ship worldwide! To keep the shipping costs reasonable and to ensure no damages for the drawing, I recommend to only order unframed commissions if you live outside the US.
How much are the shipping costs?
All orders are shipped via USPS Ground unless you'd like a different method.
Artwork unframed within the US: $3.03
Artwork framed within the US: $7.97
Artwork unframed to Germany: $10.72
Why do you draw with pencil?
Pencil was my first love. All through my childhood I used to only draw with pencils, while my mom always pushed me to try something else. Which I reluctantly did. Especially in art school. And I liked learning so many wonderful art techniques, but I always come back to pencil. Always. I start every project by sketching out my ideas with pencil. Realistic pencil drawings are one of my favorite things to create, and I think it's also what I do best.
